Flashings are components applied to areas of the exterior of a building to direct water away from entering the building between materials exposed to the elements. With the installation of a flashing they can provide and be part of a weather blocking component that provides a waterproofing barrier to  prolong the life and reduce the risk of deterioration to the building structure. On the home there are many areas that flashing is used: can be around window and doors, top of chimneys and where they intersect the roof, ledger boards during deck installations, at roof edges such as where a porch roof or addition is attached to an existing structure, and as well during siding installations. The materials for flashing which are commonly used are copper, pre-painted aluminum, pre-painted steel, galvanized steel and as well stainless steel. In addition to this snow guards / ice guards fall under this category and can be bent and matched with a colour similar to a steel roof installation.
